10 tips to help you stay organised when life gets hectic.

Juggling family life and running a business means inevitably things will get beyond busy at times. Here are 10 tips to help you cope.

Keep a diary/calendar

Don’t rely on memory alone especially when trying to remember appts for you, your kids, and the business, keep one source with it all recorded to avoid mistakes. ( I recommend a paper version because it doesn’t rely on battery power or wifi to use it, but that’s just my view.)

Write a list or brain dump

Write a list of everything you need to do. Don’t worry about the order yet, just give yourself some more clarity by getting it out of your head and recorded in writing.

Prioritise

There may be things that you want to do that are not time sensitive. Prioritise that list you just wrote, focussing on the pressing matters first.

Utilise colour coding

When you’re busy colour coding your list or diary can help you see more activities more quickly. It can also help highlight availability at a glance.

Talk to your support network

It can feel lonely when you’re on the go all the time. Speak to your nearest and dearest. A problem shared is a problem halved as the saying goes.

Delegate

Not everything on your to-do list will need to be completed by you. Could the kids do some extra chores even temporarily, or maybe a relative could help with the kids’ taxi duties?

Maybe its some of the business tasks you want to delegate. This blog post might give you some tips on that 6 situations when it might be time to hire a VA

Break tasks down

Often jobs don’t have to be done as a whole. Break them down into smaller actions, this can make it easier to make progress even if you only have small time slots available. For example, I don’t write a blog and publish it all in one sitting it usually has 4 sittings.

Use SOPs or processes

When you’re busy following a step-by-step guide can help you avoid mistakes. It can also provide a low-pressure task that you can do with confidence.

Set a timer

If there are things that take you down a rabbit hole and take you off schedule, set a timer so you stay on track. I do this when I am at the horses so I don’t lose track of time and miss the school pick up!

Look after yourself

It’s easy to skip meals and burn the candle at both ends to try and get more done but it won’t work in the long run. Eating properly and getting enough sleep keeps you on top form to be your most productive.
